High Tea with Filigree, The Women and The Tinkers Tale!
Date: April 2013

There has been a LOT of goings on at Filigree of late so Aprils blog is the cliff notes version of everything!!

This year we have decided to venture into sponsorship after getting a taste with the Canterbury Tactix last year. Our Marketing Manager Libby went to the recent Court Theatre production of Grease and decided that they would make a fabulous organisation to support. So after meeting with them we decided to become an official ‘Diamond Sponsor’ (very fitting!) of the Court Theatre which we are really excited about. The Court Theatre is an iconic Canterbury institution who have been greatly affected by the earthquakes and have managed to create an amazing facility and get back to their very best in the face of adversity. ‘The Shed’ as it has been dubbed is incredible and I highly recommend you taking in one of the shows during the season to see for yourself.

After further conversations with Steve and Andrea from the Court we realised that their next production was set during the exact era our new range was drawing inspiration- the 1940’s! ‘The Women’ was described to us as ‘Sex and the City of the 1940’s’ which, with all the divorce, husband stealing, mistresses and what not, it certainly is! They suggested we might like to be involved with the costumes for this production- an opportunity we absolutely jumped at! Libby and I went for a number of meetings in the wardrobe department at the Court (which Libby has dubbed Project Runway) we collaborated to create the amazing jewellery ‘The Women’ wear on stage six night a week.

I really enjoyed this process greatly- getting the images of vintage couture designs from Dior, Balenciaga and Versace- along with the fabric swatches, drawing up designs to complement them was a delight. We went to the opening night of the show and were ecstatic with how the jewellery looked on stage and seeing the costumes in their entirety for the first time.

‘The Women’ is running at The Court Theatre until April 27th and I recommend you get along and see the show! Tickets are available from the Court Theatre Box Office daily.

That brings me to our new range- ‘The Tinkers Tale’ and High Tea with Filigree. We recently launched our new range for autumn 2013 ‘The Tinkers Tale’ at the Tea House in Lincoln over High Tea. This was again a sell-out event for us which is really exciting! We had 100 guests join us for High Tea and a very causal fashion show. Once again some of our wonderful friends modelled in this show where they literally just meandered between all the tables in the Tea House giving guests a chance look at the pieces up close to capture all the fine details in our jewellery. I would like to thank the people who were involved in making this event a huge success including Vanetia and the ladies from the Tea House, Jem from Felix Culpa who made the models hair look flawless and of course our wonderful models who braved the elements outside during jewellery changes!

The look book for ‘The Tinkers Tale’ will be live on our website very soon but until then please ‘like’ our Facebook page and you can see all the behind the scenes shots from the launch event!

See you in store soon,

The total package- Filigree Fine Jewels free design service!
Date: March 2013

Happy new year (I know it is March already but I wanted to wish you all the best regards for the season belatedly since this is my first blog for 2013)!

I thought I would start the 2013 blogs on an informative note and tell you about the free design service we offer here at Filigree Fine Jewels. As we are a manufacturing jeweller with an onsite workshop we have the flexibility to realise your jewellery dreams if we don't have your dream piece already created in the store!

During the week my days are usually filled with one on one appointments of customers searching for the perfect ring. During these appointments the process is always slightly different depending on the customer. It is sometimes difficult for customers to picture what the finished product will look like and find it easier to keep searching for something that has already been created. I always keep this in mind and use every tool at my disposal to give my customers the best possible representation of a finished product that I can!

After an initial chat I can ascertain the sort of ring you have in mind and from there do some rough working drawings during the appointment. Following that I take all the information gathered during our chat and create scale drawings, right down to the last stone, to show you- we can email these through or you are able to come back in and discuss them. Sometimes the scale drawings are not enough for the imagination to get around so using our stock rings, loose stones and blue tac I try to create a 'similar' ring (this isn't always possible as we have had some really unique pieces created here at Filigree) but rest assured what I draw or create with blue tac is always the perfect representation of what you will end up with!

So once you have some scale designs drawn, have had your ring 'created' using blue tac and loose stones and you have used a little bit of imagination we are ready to make your ring! From this point it will take about 3-4 weeks for your dream ring to be created in our workshop.

The design process is not restricted to Filigrees handmade rings either! Handmade fashion jewellery can also be created as a one off, just for you, to perfectly match that outfit new outfit or the look of your wedding party.

We recently worked with Paralympic superstar Sophie Pascoe (winner of 3 gold and 3 silver medals at the London Paralympic Games in 2012) to put the finishing touches on her look for the 2013 Halberg Awards. Sophie came to us with a gorgeous belted gown in dark leopard hues with beaded detail on the bust. Sophie went through the scale designs, blue tac, loose stone and imagination process but added in the element of wearing her gown in the store as well! Sophie decided on some beautiful onyx and smoky quartz drop earrings which perfectly complimented the gown- and she took out the award she was nominated for so huge congratulations once again Sophie!!

In a recent email to us Sophie said 'While I was at the hairdressers one day, I was discussing possible jewellery options that would go with the gown I had picked out for the Halberg awards. My hairdresser told me to go across the road to Filigree Fine Jewels and talk to Vanessa and the team about what they could do.

I went in with my gown and met Libby her colleague. Libby then took photos of the dress to pass onto Vanessa to design something from scratch. Within two days I received 6 different possible options, they were all beautiful but three stuck out to me. I went back in to the shop to meet with Vanessa and Libby, working with the 3 designs we cut it down to 2. Then this was the hardest part, I had the dress on but I couldn't decide which design I wanted- my dress was very princess like but with a red carpet edge. I went with the more bold and edgy design so the earrings would standout. I gave them the date for when I had to have the earrings done by and perfect timing they were all done for the big day.

I was so excited about getting dressed up for the big night. I arrived at the hotel in Auckland, had my hair and makeup done with fellow athlete Sarah Walker and then it came down to putting the final touches on- the dress and the jewellery. Filigree also loaned me a couple of Ole Lynggaard Silk bracelets to match my belt and a gorgeous ring. I was all ready to go, wanting to rock the red carpet feeling super glam! I had so many comments that night on my earrings how beautiful and different they were. It was definitely a night to remember winning disabled sportsperson of the year and to walk out as one of the best dressed on the night! Thanks so much to Vanessa and her team at Filigree Fine Jewels for such an easy and smooth process in helping me out for the night!'

Here are a couple of snaps Sophie sent us from the night- looking fabulous in her handmade Filigree earrings (as well as a Filigree tear drop smoky quartz ring and Ole Lynggaard silk bracelets)

Filigree 12 days of Christmas

Christmas is upon us!
Date: November 2012

Just 7 short weeks until the jolly fat man comes down the chimney (or through some other means for those of us in Canterbury where a chimney is a rarity these days)! Here on Montreal Street the Filigree ‘elves’ are furiously working away in the workshop to get new things for you to love in store just for Christmas.

We have some great new pieces from our own Filigree range about to hit the store. Pearls, Smokey Quartz and pastel hues play a large role in the vintage inspired earrings and coloured stone rings being created right now. They are perfectly on trend with this summer’s fashions and will be on display in the coming weeks so make sure you come in and see us!

Our European brands Thomas Sabo and Ole Lynggaard are getting into the Christmas spirit too!

Thomas Sabo have got a Christmas gift with purchase for the Charm Club range- simply purchase one of their sterling silver link bracelets (that go with everything!) and receive an exclusive heart charm free! Easy as that!

Ole Lynggaard have launched their new silk range- made from haute couture silk and in beautiful colours inspired by nature, at just $235.00 each they are a very affordable piece of designer jewellery. They have also reduced the price of their exquisite handmade leather bracelets to just $490.00 as well- a number of the Sweet Spots, Sweet Drops and Dew Drops have also been reduced just in time for Christmas!!

Coming next month just for you is the ‘Filigree 12 Days of Christmas’ so keep an eye out on our website here and the Zest lift out in the Christchurch Press for more on that!!

Good luck with your Christmas shopping!

Vanessa xx

The new range from Ole Lynggaard has landed!
Date: October, 2012

It is short and sweet from me this month. The new range from Ole Lynggaard has landed - Silk Seduction! Ole Lynggaard have employed haute couture seamstresses to sew these very sophisticated bracelets in exquisite and strong silk. The silk is difficult to describe and is something you have to see for yourself to fully appreciate! As pictured, the silk bracelets are the same design as their leather counterpart but the silk gives the bracelet an even dressier dimension.

Charlotte Lynggaard has always drawn a lot of her design inspiration from nature and its wonders and this is beautifully reflected in the colours available - Safari Brown, Emerald Green, Petroleum Blue, Camel, Chocolate Brown and well as ever popular black and grey.

Here at Filigree we are the exclusive stockist of Ole Lynggaard in the South Island and are pleased to bring these exquisite bracelets to the Christchurch market, and at just $235.00 they are an amazing starting point for your Ole Lynggaard collection.

I imagine these will just walk out the door so see you soon to secure your Silk Seduction.

A Very Secret Proposal
Date: September, 2012

We had a Filigree first in the store on August 22nd- a carefully planned and executed secret proposal!

Two months ago our friend Graeme Blake contacted us from Hamilton and said ‘organise Julie (his partner) a ring’ and that was it- we were charged with finding out her finger size, what style of ring she likes, what cut of stone she likes…everything! So we hatched a cunning plan…

The first part of the plan was send Julie the link to our new website under the premise of wanting feedback on the layout but really wanting her to point out favourite rings. This plan did not work as Julie didn’t tell us which rings she liked, she actually provided some great feedback with examples she researched from the internet (which we will be taking on board)! So plan B was getting all of the ring images up onto our Facebook page in the hope that she will comment or ‘like’ some of them…this plan worked, however, her taste was so eclectic we couldn’t use it as a starting point for design. In comes Libby with a stroke of genius- a fake competition! Julie is a sucker for entering any competition and being so competitive she also puts her all into winning said competitions!! So Julie was emailed an entry form for ‘The Jewellery and Watchmaker Association of New Zealand Annual New Zealand Jewellers Competition’ where she could win a free engagement ring (funny thing being she was going to get a ring in the end no matter what!). With one document we had Julie’s favourite cut of stone, finger size and favourite style of ring and not only hers, her entire families! Good old Julie forwarded it around her family and friends to fill in too!

So now that we had this information we were able to draw up a few designs for Graeme to choose from - which is where we hit the next hurdle…Graeme informed us that we can’t email, text or call him because they work together Julie would always be around when the design ideas needed to be scanned and sent to him! Cue Libby with another stroke of genius…set up a fake Hotmail address! So, that was how Graeme was able to select a design from the five potential choices. Finally we had the design and go ahead to create Julie's Princess cut platinum ring with diamond detail in the shoulders.

Now that the ring was sorted (and that was the easy part!) we had to get Julie and Graeme to the ring or the ring to Julie and Graeme without suspicion. Luckily they both had some leave booked so a trip to Christchurch on Julie’s birthday “to visit friends and do business” was a feasible reason to make the journey south!

It went down on Julie’s 31st birthday, Wednesday 22nd August. She thought she was coming to catch up with Libby and I for a wine at Revival across the road, meeting us at Filigree first to have a look at the store (we think secretly she was hoping Graeme was planning to surprise her with a birthday purchase…). All lights were turned off in the store apart from a single down light on the front counter illuminating a black Filigree ring box while the Rolling Stones ‘Wild Horses’ played softly in the background- a very romantic setting! It was clear Julie had no idea this was to be a very important moment in her life as she bowled in the door shouting out to us and proceeded to look in all the cabinets of fashion jewellery, totally ignoring the single black box on the counter!

After trying to get Julie to look at the box on the counter twice Graeme had to finally open it and flash it under her nose to get her attention! It wasn’t until he was on one knee in front of her that it finally hit her that the ring was for her and he was in fact seriously asking her to marry him! She of course said yes and was so overwhelmed by the unexpected birthday surprise (this all went down while Libby and I very quietly hid in the conference room! Libby however left herself a small, but strategic gap in the curtains so she could also watch this very private moment and silently cheer and fist pump in the darkness)!

After some tears, kisses and hugs we couldn’t stay quiet any longer so burst through the curtains to congratulate the happy couple! After a debrief and some serious analysis by Julie of how we managed to pull this all off without her even having an inkling (some conversations between her and Graeme now made sense, Libby laughing at her when she was venting that he had not sorted anything for their week off together became funny to her too and all the emails and texts about a Christchurch “photographer”, code word for “ring” were pieced together) we toasted to their future together with delicious bubbles and Julies signature Red Bull and Vodka!

And the rest they say is history…we will leave the final word on this blog to Graeme and Julie…

‘The most amazing thing happens when you commission a piece of jewellery from Libby and Vanessa and the Team at Filigree Fine Jewels. They let you become part of the coolest creative journey toward the most outstanding platinum and diamond engagement ring. Both Libby and Vanessa made the entire experience so easy and so infinitely unforgettable.
I could have gone to any jeweller in the country; I'm so pleased I went with Filigree Fine Jewels. You guys are truly amazing. Jules and I will be back for the wedding bands and to see our new friends at Filigree’- Graeme and Jules

See you soon,

A night in the Filigree Big Top
Date: August, 2012

What a month it has been!! We have been furiously working away to get the Filigree Carnival organised so we can launch our Winter 2012 range in a grand way- and launch it in a grand way we did!! On a night dubbed ‘The Filigree Carnival’ we unveiled our new range to the world in the Filigree Big Top (a big, bright yellow and white marquee erected in front of our Montreal Street store).

Guests were greeted with fresh popcorn from our old fashioned popcorn machine (which was so appealing some local characters tried to make off down the street with it!) and a glass of bubbles as they entered the carnival. When they reached their seats they found their fabulous goodie bags containing our new Filigree rock candy, a pair of carnival handmade earrings, discount vouchers for the store as well as some great offers with thanks to Felix Culpa (who did the models hair for the evening) and Total Body Concept.
Once all our guests were packed in (it was definitely a cosy atmosphere) our fabulous ringmaster Luciano got the audience excited about what was to come- unusual, bold and beautiful jewellery.

Britney Spears kicked off the show with her aptly named song Circus as the first ‘model’ appeared in the front window- Michael Armstrong from Stargaze Entertainment who got the runway underway with an amazing juggling performance (which included very large knives on our not very wide runway)! Our beautiful models were a mixture of friends, a stilt walker, customers and a couple of BLACKCAPS for good measure.

As well as Michael juggling his knives and Daniel the stilt walker on the runway we had Mim provide a contortion display during the show which had most jaws on the ground (which can’t have been nice considering the floor was covered in pea straw) with her insane flexibility.

Following the show we invited our 120 guests into the store for some tasty nibbles and drinks as well as a closer look at the pieces they had just seen on the runway. The DJ kicked in not long after that and the party continued on into the wee smalls…and the rest is history!

The new range is instore now and looks fantastic! Come in and see us to make sure you secure your own piece of ‘Carnival’ by Filigree before we sell out!!

Look forward to seeing you in the store soon,
Vanessa and the team
